(Thaifunk) Playing it cool like it’s 1974! But what’s pulsing through those deep bass speakers actually comes from 2025 and goes by the name Seoi Nage—presenting their debut album, a hybrid of 1970s funk and film scores somewhere between Eastern cinema and Italian giallo.
Think detective music, but not in the realm of noir—rather, splashed in vibrant colors, packed with chase scenes, hedonism, and the occasional showdown. Seoi Nage, named after a classic judo throw, was an obvious choice when the four musicians first met in Münster a few years ago, bonded by their shared background in martial arts.
The lineup: Jakob Hersch (Taishogoto), Anton Zimmermann (drums) and Pogo McCartney (bass guitar, electric guitar, percussion, synthesizer & piano)—with McCartney as the group’s creative mastermind.
Originally a studio project, Seoi Nage has taken their sound to the stage in recent years, accompanied by film projections from Simon Büchting, who visually captures their retro-tinged soundscape.
After an initial EP, now comes the full-length experience, with no commercial breaks: NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER.
