und präsentieren einen gereiften Sound, der einen gewaltigen Schritt nach vorne verdeutlicht.
Zusammen mit den Produzenten Mathew Johnson und Jonny Zoum wurde eine neue emotionale Klangästhetik kreiert, die besonders von sphärischen und zugleich drängenden, mitreißenden Gitarren sowie energetischen Drums geprägt wird und den gewohnt cinematischen Post-Punk der Band bereichert.
Die besondere enge Bindung der beiden Bandmitglieder zueinander, die auch bei ihren Live-Performances als auffallendes Charakteristikum hervortritt, wird im gesamten Album spürbar. So entstanden fast alle Songs im engen, gemeinsamen Schreibprozess und auch die Inhalte der Texte beziehen die beiden häufig auf den jeweils anderen. Die kontinuierlich miteinander agierenden Gitarren fangen dieses Gefühl beständig ein. Geprägt wurde das Album aber auch von den Auswirkungen der weltweiten Covid-Pandemie, die kaum Raum ließ für etwas Anderes als Selbstreflexion. So zeigt NOT ALL OF YOUR PAIN IS SELF CHOSEN einen tiefen, persönlichen Einblick in das Leben und Denken von SUIR. Ängste, Sorgen, Selbstzweifel, aber auch Liebe und Zuneigung wurden in den zehn Songs des Albums verarbeitet. So beschreibt Sänger Denis Wanic das Album als „This might be our darkest record so far. However it has nothing to do with celebrating sadness – we don ́t do that. This record is about healing, growing, and changing.“

Emilie Zoe – Hello Future Me col.LP (Hummus)

Emilie Zoé alone at home, sitting across from the world, from the future, staring at a reflection in the mirror. After nearly infinite touring promoting The Very Start and a couple of records born from spontaneous collaborations (Pigeons with Christian Garcia-Gaucher, /A with Franz Treichler, Ossuaire with Abraham), it was time to take the next steps, Emilie Zoé’s own sequel.
Written with nothing else than grit, Hello Future Me is the result of 18 months of work between an apartment and a rehearsal room, looking for the imperfectly personal sound worthy of the name and to create vertiginous landscapes to get lost in. Self-produced and self-exploratory, this album expresses Emilie Zoé’s inner wanderings, delicately crafted with Emilie’s favourite tools: a guitar that just turned 60, a sturdy hand-made guitar amp, a dusty organ from a flea market and a broken piano.
This is also a collaborative effort, with a close team of cherished friends who have been there forever, at every step and every doubt in the process. Nicolas Pittet’s drums and voice here again support and raise Emilie Zoé’s bluesy riffs and melodies. Louis Jucker’s touch can be felt in every speck of arrangement and behind every squeaky button. Next to the old wood board flooring of the living room and the bedroom carpet, one can also taste the acrid air of the cavernous offices of Hummus Records, Kevin Galland’s care behind the small dying console, the ribbon microphones, the tapes rolling, the piles of dirty punk amps and synthesizers.
With Hello Future Me, Emilie Zoé takes a moment to meticulously rummage through a backpack full of thoughts and songs. The album rekindles with the near-sighted intimacy of the artist’s first lo-fi folk tunes, the floating sweetness of a ballad played on a piano, the electric intensity of a modified beefed-up guitar, hanging down so low that it exorcises anxiety, love, infinity, and the space-time continuum.
Thrown into the future as if they were a series of messaged bottles into the sea, these eight songs preciously carry in them an eagerness for change and a fascination with emptiness, self-doubts and shared dreams.

SHUN sind ein Neo Shoegaze-Quartett aus Münster, die mit Songs from the Centrifuge ihren ersten Longplayer bei This Charming Man Records veröffentlichen. Zwar releaste die Band nach einigen Demos bislang lediglich das Tape Nothing Quite As Heavy mit vier Songs, dieses zog aber bereits über 40 Shows in fünf Ländern nach sich, bei denen die Band die Bühne mit Bands wie Slow Crush, Odd Couple oder den 80s-Helden The Psychedelic Furs teilte. Mit der Debüt-LP kommt nun endlich neues Material, welches die Band in neue Sphären bringt.
Sucht man nach passenden Adjektiven, fallen einem sogleich „verträumt“, „verschwurbelt“ oder „benebelt“ ein – das passt ganz gut als Stimmungsbarometer der neun Songs, wobei auch düstere oder bedrohliche, dissonante Momente ihren Platz finden. „Centrifuge“, die erste Single aus dem Album, ist zum Beispiel so ein Song, bei dem eine deutlich spürbare Schwere im Refrain zum Tragen kommt, wie man sie von Genre-Schwergewichten wie Nothing oder Slowdive kennt. Trotz all der Dichte liefern SHUN hier aber keine einseitige Shoegaze-Wand ab – vielmehr kehren einige Songs auch eine euphorische, fast schon naiv-sorglose Stimmung heraus, die man eher aus dem Dream Pop und Indie kennt. Alles bleibt aber ständig unter düsteren Vorzeichen, gesäumt von Space Rock á la Spiritualized und beat-getriebenen Post-Punk Parts wie man sie von Bands wie DIIV oder den Chameleons kennt.
Zeitlich verorten lässt sich Songs from the Centrifuge also irgendwo in den Mid 80ern und im ersten Drittel der 90er. Die Produktion von Pogo McCartney (Messer, Nuage & das Bassorchester, Criminal Body), das Master von Christian Bethge und das Artwork von Benny Druckwelle (The Tidal Sleep, Spirit Crusher) fangen den retrofuturistischen Vibe perfekt ein.

With their sophomore incarnation “Summoning The Putrid“ the french bringers of rotten OLD SCHOOL DEATH METAL IRON FLESH return from the graves to unleash another fine slab of HM2-MADNESS.
While maintaining the massive wall of sound by the early 90’s scandinavian overlords IRON FLESH is not willing to go down as merely tribute to ancient times. They display an amazingly varied songwriting that reminds a lot of classic EDGE OF SANITY magic. Whereas the faster material tend to incorporate sharp melodic riffing that UNANIMATED or CENTINEX in their prime could not have done better, IRON FLESH also delivers some of the finest DEATH-DOOM ever to come out of french soil. The excellent mixture of the heaviness of later BOLT THROWER or ASPHYX and the hypnotic and melancholic lead-guitarwork that would make old PARADISE LOST proud simply fires on all cylinders. To cut it short: „ Summoning The Putrid“ is nothing short than first class old school death metal anno 2021! IRON FLESH WON’T STAY A SECRET FOR LONG..!

Entropy initially started out as a bedroom project but soon developed into a full-fledged band devoted to fusing heavier post-hardcore sounds and indie and shoegaze elements. Think Hüsker Dü meets Helmet meets Nothing meets Torche. There’s a distinct 90s vibe here, sure, but Entropy doesn’t just want to conjure up the past – their energy and drive propels them into the present and keeps their feet firmly planted in the here and now. The band features former and current members of The Now-Denial, Night Slug, Hillside and EA80.

Pickle some cut-loose early SAINTS demos, SUICICE COMMANDOS weirdness, off MAD PARADE / LEFTOVERS vocals with riff-driven, loud guitars. S.U.G.A.R. did not played any shows yet. It won´t change a bit of that odd and rough impression, those hellhounds are battle-scarred by the roaring years of garage rock and we would not wonder if the members sum up to thousand shows total in their previous bands. Nuclear Warfare – Empowered By Hate LP (MDD)
For 15 years now the South German NUCLEAR WARFARE have dedicated themselves to the good old Thrash Metal of the 80s and have established themselves in the last years to spearheading this genre. In addition to countless tours and concerts across the continent, the time has come for a new album every few years. So also 2017.
“Empowered By Hate” is the name of the new album, and the album title reflects the aim! 10 neckbreakers have hammered, produced and mastered in the Papiris studio in Sao Paulo. The work was made under the direction of Caio Monfort between August 2016 and January 2017, in order to release them into humanity in the form of their now fifth longplayer.
And everyone who knows the South Germans, knows also that their merciless homage to the German Thrash of the 80s, mixed with Bay Area influences, is always able to unscrew your head!
Losing much more words would be like carry coals to Newcastle. In addition, the band regularly found a way to descripe their music in just a few words, like the titel of the predecessor album “Just Fucking Thrash”. This time the last track of the album gets the point: “Thrash To The Bone”. Nothing more to say!

Trautonist – s/t LP (W&V)
Trautonist take the energy, roughness and euphoria of black metal and combine it with the melancholia of shoegaze. The songs are naturally flowing, thriving on the combination of Dennis harsh and Katharinas beautifuly fragile vocals.
The record has been mastered by non other than Markus Siegenhort of the well-known Lantlôs that gave the record a warm and rich sound but still keeping the necessary harshness.The artwork by Pascal Hauer who has contributed design for bands like Nothing or Lantlôs underlines the feeling of the music perfectly – transfering an urban but surreal feeling that makes you think of a David Lynch movie.
Whether one wants to call this blackgaze, post black metal or modern black metal:The self titled record of ‘Trautonist’ is a compilation of 6 perfectly balanced songs – captivating the listener right from the start with the raging blast parts of the opening track ‘Stay’ but always gives time to breathe in between like the following ‘Distance’ does.

Gloom Sleeper – A Void LP (Per Koro)
Yes – GLOOM SLEEPER are very late to the post-punk party, but they don’t particularly sound like the contemporary and earlier bands of the genre. Nothing from this release sounds dated or trite. GLOOM SLEEPER’s style extends from post-punk to new wave, from gothic atmosphere builders to upbeat guitar pop. The band used the recording session to create a textured sonic art that married a breath taking understanding of atmosphere (without loosing its punky edge) with a sense of emotional fury. The music soars where it should and drifts when the listener needs a break from the intensity. The layered, jangly guitar releases liquid notes, the dedicated bass player pumps out rhythms, the fairly powerful drum section bites and the somewhat gothic styled vocals mixed into the songs take everything to a higher level. These guys from Bielefeld, Germany are creating their music based on the sound made popular by British bands like THE SOUND and ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN or THE WIPERS from the other side of the pond. At the same time, the influence of today’s THE ESTRANGED or TERRIBLE FEELINGS is obvious. The result is a unique sound that is somehow beyond mere words – “a void” feels entirely cohesive and unified. The inventive arrangements and intricate playing can’t take the catchiness out of these 10 songs – vinyl comes with a heavy printed innersleeve and includes a digital download card. “a void” will leave you re-playing to excess!

Ed Fraser – Ghost Gums col.LP
Ed Fraser is the Singer and guitarplayer of berlins darknoise trio HEADS.
Native Melbournian singer, guitarist and songwriter Ed Fraser relocated to Berlin from Australia in 2013, founding the Berlin-based post punk band Heads. with two native Germans in early 2014. Heads. released two critically acclaimed LPs – S/T (2015) and Collider (2018) – with label releases in Europe, Australia and the USA, extensively touring Europe and North America with bands the likes of Metz (Canada), Protomartyr (USA), Nothing (USA) and many more.
Ed has now expanded his musical repertoire with his debut solo EP ‘Ghost Gums’, out via This Charming Man Records in 2019. Recorded over one week in Berlin with a dynamic band including Spike Rogers on drums and Rosa Mercedes on bass, plus guest musicians including Paul Seidel and Peter Voigtmann of seminal German band The Ocean, on Ghost Gums Ed explores a more personal side. Here Ed’s deep vocal expresses somber and direct lyricism amongst fluid, vibrant and at times
more experimental instrumentation and vocal layers. From beginning to end Ghost Gums explores themes of loss and romance, and is an exploration of new and uncharted territory for Ed as a songwriter.
With ghostly artwork designed by Australian artist Luke Fraser (Amyl & The Sniffers, John Frusciante), and mixed and mastered in Stockholm by Magnus Lindberg (Cult Of Luna, Heads.), Ed and his band are excited to deliver Ghost Gums to audiences in Europe and beyond.
