Emilie Zoe – Hello Future Me col.LP (Hummus)

11.02.2022

Emilie Zoé alone at home, sitting across from the world, from the future, staring at a reflection in the mirror. After nearly infinite touring promoting The Very Start and a couple of records born from spontaneous collaborations (Pigeons with Christian Garcia-Gaucher, /A with Franz Treichler, Ossuaire with Abraham), it was time to take the next steps, Emilie Zoé’s own sequel.

Written with nothing else than grit, Hello Future Me is the result of 18 months of work between an apartment and a rehearsal room, looking for the imperfectly personal sound worthy of the name and to create vertiginous landscapes to get lost in. Self-produced and self-exploratory, this album expresses Emilie Zoé’s inner wanderings, delicately crafted with Emilie’s favourite tools: a guitar that just turned 60, a sturdy hand-made guitar amp, a dusty organ from a flea market and a broken piano.

This is also a collaborative effort, with a close team of cherished friends who have been there forever, at every step and every doubt in the process. Nicolas Pittet’s drums and voice here again support and raise Emilie Zoé’s bluesy riffs and melodies. Louis Jucker’s touch can be felt in every speck of arrangement and behind every squeaky button. Next to the old wood board flooring of the living room and the bedroom carpet, one can also taste the acrid air of the cavernous offices of Hummus Records, Kevin Galland’s care behind the small dying console, the ribbon microphones, the tapes rolling, the piles of dirty punk amps and synthesizers.

With Hello Future Me, Emilie Zoé takes a moment to meticulously rummage through a backpack full of thoughts and songs. The album rekindles with the near-sighted intimacy of the artist’s first lo-fi folk tunes, the floating sweetness of a ballad played on a piano, the electric intensity of a modified beefed-up guitar, hanging down so low that it exorcises anxiety, love, infinity, and the space-time continuum.

Thrown into the future as if they were a series of messaged bottles into the sea, these eight songs preciously carry in them an eagerness for change and a fascination with emptiness, self-doubts and shared dreams.

Rorcal / Earthflesh – Witchcoven col.LP (Hummus)

For this new release, black metal/doom quintet RORCAL teams up with malevolent sound mistreator EARTHFLESH to give birth to the ugliest, darkest & roughest tracks of its career. WITCHCOVEN displays two long & complex songs best described as nightmares of dreadful horror. The harsh noise & deep cracklings provided by Bruno (who happens to be Rorcal’s original bass player) and his new project Earthflesh, creates a whole new level of deepness in the music and supplements the band’s violent take on doomy black metal in a brand new way. The result, perpetually oscillating between crawling doom, massive drone, raw black metal & pure noise, is as thick as it is terrifying. In the end, the symbiosis between the two entities is utterly breathtaking.

/A\ – Debut Album LP (Hummus)

/A\ is made up of Emilie Zoé, Franz Treichler and Nicolas Pittet. The seven tracks in their debut album, the result of a series of jam sessions, perfectly synthesises the respective worlds of the members of this ad hoc trio. From one track to the next, a series of strange and perfect hybrids combine harmonically rich pop with driving rhythmic patterns, with perfectly arranged windows for woodsy acoustic soundscapes and electronic alterations. In doing so, /A\ multiplies different energies and dynamics: the warmth of a migratory blues (Hotel Stellar), cat-like, undulating post rock (Grain Sand and Mud), low-tempo machine-like fury (We Travel the Light), a pale morning atmosphere (Count to Ten), mutant trip hop (The Leaves), an idle climb to Golgotha (Our Love is Growing)… And the best in all this is that these trailblazing ideas follow each other with an incredible sense of naturalness.

Closet Disco Queen – Omlelette Du Fromage col.LP (Hummus)

The album title is a vibrant hommage to « The Big Cheese » episode of Cartoon Network’s animated series « Dexter’s laboratory » from 1996. In this episode, Dexter decides to learn french while sleeping. After putting and turning on his subconscious discographic hypnotator, he falls asleep to the sound of a french learning method playing on vinyl (!). The record turns out to be broken and stuck on an endless loop, repeating the phrase « Omelette du Fromage » over and over. By the time he wakes up he is physically incapable of saying anything else than these three words. For some reason he ends up becoming worldwide famous, giving public speeches and being a celebrity just by saying « Omelette du Fromage ».

Just like Dexter, the band is hoping to gain instant celebrity across the universe with this very much à-propos album name and its beautiful and elusive graphic design. Or maybe Closet Disco Queen & The Flying Raclettes are just as much of a fraud as Dexter in the big cheese episode.

But don’t be fooled : the album is an organic yet powerful piece of instrumental loud rock music. The additional musicians (bass and guitar) have allowed the former two piece to enhance their songwriting and dig deeper into their sound, implementing stronger punk, progressive as well as psych and ambient elements in their music. Bands quoted as inspiration during the creative process went from The Mars Volta, Breach, The Hives or Goat. The album was written, recorded, mixed and mastered within 20 days by the band itself.

This record was the result of a project initiated by one of Switzerland’s coolest event : Palp Festival. In the beautiful scenery of the Valais mountains they organize tons of shows with international and local acts in places as remote as they are breathtaking (dams, cabins, mountain lakes, etc…). They also make sure everybody gets their fill of the local and worldwide famous products : white wine and cheese. They gave Closet Disco Queen the opportunity to live in the tiny mountain village of Bruson and an access to an abandoned school where the band built a DIY mobile studio, started writing and 15 days later the album was sent to the pressing plant.

Peter Kernel – Perseverance: 15 Years Of Peter Kernel LP (Hummus)

Perseverance: persistence in doing something despite difficulty and delay in achieving success. Our secret weapon since 2005.

Peter Kernel “Perseverance” is not an album. It is the behind the scene musical history of the band. With all the good and bad decisions. It is a collection of tracks that throughout the years haven’t found their place on official albums, but in one way or another have shaped us and brought us to be here today doing what we love to do. These ideas are like us: imperfect, bad, good, funny, sad, incomplete, boring, too much, not enough, full of flaws. Human.

My soul is a hidden orchestra; I know not what instruments, what fiddlestrings and harps, drums and tamboura I sound and clash inside myself. All I hear is the symphony.” Fernando Pessoa, ‘The Book of Disquiet’.

It is easy to assume that the soul of Swiss noise aggressors Knut’s sound is tortured and twisted…

indeed little else fits the aggression and turbulence of its voice but it is a turmoil which breeds clamorous symphonies and records which devour and corrupt and in their own infernal way, seduce. The moment when the cacophonous siren call of their music truly took the world was the release of debut album, ‘Leftovers’. It was an aural trespass which challenged and assaulted the senses, rising in the wake of the diversity of noise and extreme metal fuelled bands such as Neurosis, Carcass, Napalm Death, Godflesh, Coroner, Today Is The Day, Helmet, Melvins, and Eisenvater to leave its own indelible mark on the evolution of extreme temptation. Now the increasingly recognised seminal encounter has a long-awaited re-release, remastered by Lad Agabekov from Nostromo and on the much deserved vinyl format for the very first time through the equally inimitable Hummus Records.

Geneva in early 1994 saw the coming together of four men with a rich diversity of musical backgrounds. Even so they were united in a love of sonic clamour and in league the foursome of vocalist Didier Severin, guitarist Philippe Hess, drummer Roderic Mounir and bassist Thierry van Osselt (who would leave and be replaced by Jeremy Tavernier by the time of the band’s third album) entangled and forged the most compelling essences of metal, hardcore, and raw noise aggression for an invasive proposition which was ravenously intense, physically unrefined and inescapably gripping. Several 7” releases were uncaged as the band took the D.I.Y route before forming their own label, Snuff Records, to release the attention bruising ‘Leftovers’  in 1997 to be followed a year later by its acclaimed successor ‘Bastardiser’.

Subsequent years have seen Knut release a trio of albums through prestigious Boston label HYDRA HEAD (Cave In, Botch, Coalesce, Keelhaul, Drowningman), and tour the world alone and alongside a host of renowned peers, their reputation and sound only increasing in acclaimed clamour yet ‘Leftovers’ still grips a momentous place in the band’s history and that of feral creativity. Self-produced and mixed by David Weber, the seven track invasion preys on weaknesses within the psyche; vehemence soaking the violence of its sonic howl as untamed menace and irritation hones the tempest of its metal bred corrosion. Primal grooves tunnel through the body like carnal vines as rhythms simultaneously abuse and invigorate while rapacious downtuned riffs gnaw ravenously at the senses and united they casts a Tartarean beauty which cannot be escaped.

Undoubtedly Knut have proceeded to unleash encounters and tracks which have strikingly twisted and persistently re-ignited the landscape of noise but there is an indefinable essence about ‘Leftovers’ which has maybe been built upon and evolved but never quite emulated again. Like the band’s fans Hummus Records recognise that irresistible quality and open the door on the cage of the innovative beast to once more let it loose on the world.

Red Kunz – Teeth, Hair & Skin LP (Hummus)

Good records sometimes need to go that easy:

Saturday, January 11th 2014 : Aaron Beam and John Sherman (RED FANG) fly to Switzerland straight after the band’s performance at the famous Letterman Show in New York to meet Louis Jucker and Luc Hess (KUNZ) at the airport. The 4 guys drive to Lausanne, straight to the venue LE ROMANDIE, put their two bass amps and drums on stage, then go out for a beer in a funny local cover bands festival.

Sunday 12th, They write 4 songs in the deserted venue and go to sleep.

Monday 13th, a whole crew of video makers, graphic designers and other creative minds set up its camp in the
club’s backstage. Mission is to get the most work done within a week.

Tuesday 14th, Everyone is super pumped and party a little too hard.

Wednesday 15th, The band spends the day tracking songs, goes out for a walk, buys a small acoustic guitar in a pawn shop, comes back to the club, plays the tunes again in front of the crew’s cameras and decides to keep these takes as the final ones.

Thursday 16th, Aaron and Louis write vocal lines and lyrics in Jucker’s attic studio. John and Luc drink beers and eat pizzas.

Friday 17th, The whole town is gathered in a packed venue to see the new born RED KUNZ playing their first record : TEETH, HAIR AND SKIN, 20 minutes of raw bass riffing and double drums battles that somehow manage to sound like proper catchy songs. Fact is that they were all conceived and taped within a single and cool week of friendship, beers, and jams.

Rorcal – Creon 2xLP (Hummus)

Three years after the monstruous and blackened “Világvége”, RORCAL is back with a brand new full length entitled “CREON”. Again, this new beast is showing a different face of the band by the mean of 4 hellish tracks for more than 50 minutes of music. Furious, but also melodic, these new songs display a wild range of atmosphere, each one serving the purpose of an epic story. Yes, it’s the death of 4 well known Greek characters, all linked to Creon, that are narrated in this new concept album. Punishing blast beats, heavy riffs, progressive structures expressed through brilliant song writing, possessed vocals ; everything is here reunited to create a new level of insanity in the field of extreme music. This 4th full length, recorded in three days in live conditions by Steph Kroug and mixed in Sweden by Daniel Bergstrand, is a journey nobody could have dreamed of. Let the magic do its job, let yourself drown in this beautiful and savage piece of aggression.

Closet Disco Queen – Drink the Minibar – Live Recordings col.LP (Hummus)

To summarize this release in one sentence : Sorting out shit on hard drives during the lockdown can make people (especially those running a record label) want to release records that no one asked for.

This Closet Disco Queen live album features songs from two different shows. The first one was recorded in Krasnodar, Russia in 2016 during the band’s second Russian tour named “Draining Russia’s Vodka Reserve Tour 2016”. It was engineered, recorded and mixed by Evgeny Poluyantsev, friend of the band and back then also the official sound guy at this venue called Sgt. Peppers. There was no purpose to this live recording other than the sound guy being nice enough to offer and set it up. This is probably why Luc (drums) and Jona (guitar) had to add “Vodka Version” next to some songs. I mean, coffee and fruit juices weren’t exactly the official drink back (and on) stage…

The second show was recorded at L’Aéronef in Lille, France, during the band’s last tour in June 2017. Closet Disco Queen was supporting Red Fang on a few shows. After the Lille show, the band’s sound guy – super hero Chris Edrich – gave them a USB stick and said : “Here’s a stereo recording of tonight’s mix.”. And that was it.

“Drink the Minibar” was the name of the band’s 2017 tour of Poland. Credit goes to polish promoter and longtime friend “Boro” (he also plays in this awesome band called Lonker See).

Darius – Voir col.LP (Hummus)

Following the releases of «Grain» and «Clôture», Darius’ third opus «Voir» lives up to their reputation. After heading to Laval (FR) to meet with young producer Amaury Sauvé (Birds in Row), the five Fribourgers came back with a massive record whose overview is worthy of a CinemaScope western. Their twenty-two guitar strings compose a surprising orchestral landscape that masterfully oscillates between abstract noise rock and instrumental post-rock. Their playing has refined although it hasn’t soothed; Darius’ formula stays the same. Being poles apart from effects, manners and make-up, these five lads play for the sake of passion, honor and camaraderie. A beautiful live band to be taken in the face, with open arms, calm breath and a battling heart. [L. Jucker]

Emilie Zoe & Christian Garcia-Gaucher – Pigeons col.LP (Hummus)

Emilie Zoé was invited in 2018 by the alternative film festival « 2300 plan 9 à Les Étranges Nuits du Cinéma » in La Chaux-de-Fonds, CH to create a live soundtrack for a movie of her choice. She asked Christian Garcia-Gaucher, who had recently produced her second album The Very Start, to join the project. They chose together Roy Andersson’s A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence for its hypnotic rhythm and its overall contemplative atmosphere and worn out colors. Within a few days, they wrote a collection of delicate themes and slightly melancholic interludes that they could play along the original feature. The show sold out and it felt crucial to everyone that such an exciting project would not end there. They gathered few months later in Swiss producer Louis Jucker’s tiny attic studio to lay these sounds on rusty second hand tapes. These 11 demo tapes merged spontaneously into a rich collaborative album, that assembles lo-fi pop hits and intriguing field recordings into a surprisingly coherent whole.
